Week of Oct. 30 to Nov. 3

 Information for All Students: 

Schedule for this week: There are no block periods and no Trojan Times this week. Monday and Tuesday are regular days (all periods).  You do not have school on Wednesday, November 1st. Thursday and Friday are regular days.  Dismissal times are the same all week: 3:35 pm. 

If you need to do any makeups, come in at lunch since there's no TT. 

Trojan Time Calendar  

Remember that TT is an academic period -- you must bring some schoolwork to do during TT.  If you don't have any work, bring a book to read.  You should not plan to spend the time gaming or chatting with friends. 

Halloween Costume Contest -- in the courtyard at lunch on Tuesday.  If you dress as a historical person, I will give you 5 points extra credit. 


EL World History 

We'll sketch the transition from pre-industrial to industrialized society. 

We'll move on to Industrialization and the "Second" Industrial Revolution

You'll take a vocabulary quiz. 

You'll draw a "social class pyramid."  

We'll begin to discuss the problems that arose during the Industrial Revolution, and how people tried to deal with the problems.

US History

If you missed last Friday's quiz on the "Rise of Industrialism," see me immediately to arrange a makeup.   

Your textbook notes on "Populism and Protest" are due on Tuesday. 

We'll move on to the section of the unit focusing on the "New Immigration." You'll take some slide notes, and we'll discuss the concepts of acculturation and assimilation. 

If we have time, we'll analyze some political cartoons on Americans' attitudes toward immigration during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

 Information for All Students: 

Schedule for this week: Tuesday TT is open.  Wednesday TT is closed. 

If you need to do any makeups, make an appointment for Tuesday.  You can also drop by at lunch, but this only works for shorter assignments, since you only have half an hour. 

Trojan Time Calendar

End of 1st Quarter: First quarter ended on Thursday, October. 12.  I will submitted grades on Tuesday, October 17.  There is  now a new gradebook for the 2nd quarter.  Note that your 1st semester grade (the one that goes on your transcript) is calculated as the average of the 1st and 2nd quarter grades. 

If you have any questions about your grade, email me or drop by room 122 at lunch or break.

EL World History 

Our new unit is the Industrial Revolution.

We'll start with some new vocabulary. 

Our first topic will be the Agricultural Revolution -- this important time period set the stage for industrialization.

We'll start our new unit: Industrialization, Immigration and the Progressives. You should have a new divider for this unit in your binder. 

Textbook Notes: Rise of Industrialism.  Pages 204 - 210 in the American Odyssey textbook (posted on GC). 

Query: is it true that "What's good for business is good for America"?   In the late 19th century, many people thought this was true.  We'll look at some evidence for and against this proposition. 

We may have a quiz on this early part of the unit.

 Information for All Students: 

Schedule for this week: Both TTs are open. Make appointments for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday: Great Shake (disaster drill).  Periods will be slightly shorter than usual, but school is out at the usual time (3:35 pm).

We'll cover the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte. 

We're coming to the end of this unit (French Revolution).  We'll do some review, and take a unit test.

We'll discuss the successes and failures of Reconstruction, and you will write an evidence-based paragraph on this topic. 

We'll review this unit with a crossword puzzle, and the unit test will take place on Thursday or Friday.

Schedule for this week: PSAT.  There are no block periods and NO Trojan Times this week. You will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday. On both days, school is out at 2:50 pm.  Check the schedules posted in the room and on the school website for details. 

CVHS  Bell Schedules

End of 1st Quarter: First quarter ends on Thursday, October. 12.  Check your grade in Aeries, and talk with your teachers to see if there is any missing work that you are still eligible to turn in before the quarter ends.

We'll continue our study of the French Revolution, including the causes of the revolution.  What types of inequality existed? Who wanted change?   

You'll be adding some new words to your vocabulary notebook. 

You'll complete a chart of the causes of the French Revolution, and write an essay on the most important causes. 

We'll discuss the new government and the "Reign of Terror."

We will focus on the events leading to the Civil War. You will complete a timeline of significant events. 

You'll analyze a political cartoon. 

You will read and analyze a series of primary source documents on slavery.  

We'll cover the main events of the Civil War, and the aftermath of the war -- the period of time known as Reconstruction.
