World Civ:
Students took an open-note homework quiz on "China Responds to Pressure from the West," then used the remaining class time to complete the chart showing conditions in pre-revolutionary China.
Homework due Monday: "Collapse of Imperial Rule."
Optional extra credit: worksheet on the Opium War -- to get credit, answers must be complete and thoughtful.

US History:
We continued out timeline of the War in Vietnam, and discussed the "counterculture" of the '60s.
Due Monday: "1968: A Year of Crises."

APEH:
The T-shirts look great! We're special.
We are beginning to review intensively for the AP exam (Friday, May 6th at 12:30 in the library).
I'll offer after-school sessions throughout next week, for anyone who shows up. I'll be handing out additional review sheets, and we'll go over some of the most critical notes and handouts from the year. We'll also try to discuss some possible essay topics.
Please plan to hand in any late work by the date of the exam.

World Civ:
We read an article about the old Chinese custom of footbinding, and noted that not all Chinese women followed this tradition.
Students took notes on a video entitled "The Forbidden City."
The textbook assignment "China Responds to Pressure from the West" was due at block, but we didn't get a chance to review it; we'll do this on Thursday.

US History:
We reviewed the T-chart listing reasons why the US should support the French or the Viet Minh. Your 300 word "assertion paragraph" is due on Thursday. Begin with a clear statement of your policy recommendation. Try to draft an opening statement that acknowledges both sides of the argument but makes it clear which side you have chosen. (Example: "Although the French argue that....., the US should.....") Then support your statement with arguments drawn from the readings.

APEH:
At block, we finished discussing the LBP and handed it in.
We compared our thesis statements and outlines for the DBQ on types of government.
We'll continue reviewing; review your art chart for both semesters!
If you haven't paid for your Study Guide, I recommend that you do so immediately...you don't want to be one of those poor schmucks standing in the line outside the bookroom on graduation day...in fact, I don't even know where you're supposed to pay for it at this point, so maybe you just won't really graduate after all.

World Civ:
We reviewed our maps of China and discussed how Chinese geography impacted the development of Chinese civilization. We reviewed the assignment entitled "The Development of Chinese Civilization," including the concepts of the Mandate of Heaven and the dynastic cycle.
I handed out a textbook assignment entitled "China Responds to Pressure from the West." This is due at the block period.

US History:
Students took a short quiz on terms related to the Vietnam War.
Working together or in pairs, students worked on a chart showing arguments in favor of US support for the French or the Viet Minh in Indochina after WWII. This research is the basis for a short writing assignment that will be due on Thursday, April 28.

APEH:
We did hub dates and maps.
We started a discussion of the LBP; we'll continue this at block.
At block, we should be able to compare outlines of the DBQ on government and to continue reviewing for the AP exam. More review sheets to come.
T-shirts are coming...I haven't figured the cost yet, but it will be around $12.

I'll give you a new review sheet when you return on Wednesday.

A word about STAR tests: Next week is STAR week! The tests cover only 4 days this year (yay) and it's essential that our students take the tests. Students take the tests in their 3rd period class. Don't stress...just get a good night's sleep, have a good breakfast, and show up!

World Civ:
Test on Russia and the Cold War is Friday. Please bring your books and notebooks to class.

US History:
Test on the Cold War is Friday. Please bring your books and notebooks to class.

APEH:
Go through the first review sheet; check out how much you can remember. Keep in mind that you want to remember the significance of the event...a vague recollection of the term is not sufficient.
Be sure you've read all the selections in Perry, so you can use class time wisely in completing the LBP. We'll try to wrap it up during STAR week, and move on to essay planning and review for the last two weeks before the exam!

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

World Civ:
Test on Russia and the Cold War is Friday, April 15.
We're wrapping up the Cold War with a review sheet that's due on Thursday.
Bring your books and notebooks to class on Friday.

US History:
We should be able to take a unit test on the Cold War, not including Vietnam, on Friday, April 15.
The worksheet on Korea (both sides) is due on Thursday.
Bring your book and notebook to class on Friday.

APEH:
I should have your Study Guides for Chapters 30 & 31.
We'll review a few recent European developments at block, then start group discussions about modern European political and social issues. You must have the Perry selections read before you come to class...otherwise you will be completing the assignment on your own rather than with a group.
We'll begin reviewing soon!
The AP European Exam will take place on Friday, May 6th. We're less than a month away from the exam, and one of the intervening weeks is STAR week (we meet only twice). If you haven't developed a plan for studying for the exam, you should do this now (especially if you also have other AP exams)!

World Civ:
We spent some time trying to understand the basic ideas of Marxism, then watched a video on the life of the truly awful Joseph Stalin.
On Thursday, we'll review "Totalitarianism Parts I and II" and then take an open-note quiz.

US History:
Students took a quick matching quiz on the ideological contrast between the East and West during the Cold War.
We reviewed two Cold War reading outlines: "Cold War Begins" and "Cold War Deepens."
We watched a video on the origins of the Cold War.
On Thursday, there will be an open note quiz on the two outlines. Students may also use notes taken during the video or during my lectures.

APEH:
You should be finished reading Chapter 30. Work on the Study Guide...I'll give time in class for this (as a break from lectures on the Post-War period).
The end is near.

Monday, April 04, 2005

Welcome to the fourth quarter! This quarter will fly by...

World Civ:
We played the Marxism game.
At block, we'll review our notes on the Iraq conflict, and get an update on the situation in Darfur.
Due Thursday: text assignment entitled "Totalitarianism Part II."

US History:
We reviewed the ideological conflicts that led to the Cold War. We'll have quiz on these concepts at the block period.
Students should have completed both reading outines ("Cold War Begins" and "Cold War Deepens").
We'll watch a video on the beginnings of the Cold War, and review the outlines at block.

APEH:
I collected the essay assigned for the break.
We completed a quick worksheet on the Cold War, and then began the endless Post-War lecture.
You will cry.
Study Guide for Chapter 30 will be due this week...I will give you some class time to work on it.
