Week 8 of Distance Learning 9-28 to 10-2

 Important Information for All Students

Distance Learning Schedule:

 https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1jpE9JCMRu6f6EYJPurjfNwITZJQmE-0EyANK2zdlqJc/edit?usp=sharing

First Quarter Grade Reports: First quarter ends on Friday, October 9th.

Late Work: Beginning this week, I will significantly reduce the point value for work that is more than 24 hours late. If your work comes in more than a week late, I will probably not grade it.

Copied Work: If you turn in work that is copied from any source, I will give you a zero for that assignment. This includes work copied from another student.

Distance Learning: Student Responsibility.  What is "learning loss?"  Why are we worried about it?  Who does it impact most, and how can you prevent it?

Open Trojan Time and Office Hours:  Please come to Trojan Time if you have questions about assignments or would like to do homework and ask questions as you work.

On your schedule, the period from 2:00 to 3:00 is "asynchronous" work time.  However, it is also a time when you can get in touch with a teacher for individual support. Please let me know if you would like to meet individually, and I will arrange a Meet.

New alternative for Open Trojan Time:  Here's how to do it.

Food!: don't forget that you can pick up a bag lunch here at CVHS (breakfast and lunch are also available at some other schools in CV). Lunch is handed out at the Mabel Street turnaround.

The CV district is trying to get the word out about the free breakfast/lunch program!  If you are under 18, or have family members or friends who are under 18, this program is for you.

Classes

EL World History:

All of your assignments related to the philosophers should be turned in, including your paragraph on "The Wisest Philosopher."

Due on Tuesday: Vocabulary Review Week 7  -  no word bank!

On Monday, we finished our "Basic Social Studies Vocabulary" review (#1 - #6).  I'm working on a big vocabulary quiz -- be sure to study the words in your vocabulary notebook.  When you study, say the words out loud and read the definitions out loud in English.   We'll do white board reviews together.

On Tuesday, you started reading about two important political systems: autocracy and democracy.  You will be filling in a chart comparing these two types of government.  Continue to work on this during your asynchronous time...it's due on Friday.

We will soon be reviewing the unit (Comparing Types of Government), and getting ready to move on to our new unit on the French Revolution!

US History:

Due last week: You should have turned in last week's work, including the Cornell notes on pages 130-35, and the lecture notes on "Early US Policies."  You should also have watched the video on the Corps of Discovery.

Notebooks:  Any notebook or binder to take notes and save materials that you print.  Can be spiral, 3-ring or homemade.

Padlet: Everyone should now be signed in to Padlet.  Change the password if necessary. I will use this program again, so if you haven't signed in, do it now. You can find the link in the Padlet assignment from a couple of weeks ago.

PBS Sign-In: You should also be signed in to PBS Learning Media. The link is in the GC stream.

On Monday, you took an "open-note" quiz on last week's assignments. This was finished in class and turned in at the end of the period (your had 15 additional minutes to finish). If the quiz was not turned in during this, I will deduct points for lateness.

During your asynchronous time this week, you will be watching two videos on different groups of people involved in the expansion of the US in the 1800s.  These groups are White pioneers and the Sioux tribe led by Sitting Bull.  You will also read a short article on African-American settlers in Kansas.   The materials, and the questions related to them, are posted in GC.

Important Note about PBS Videos: Try to sign in to PBS using the link in the "Stream" and see if you can access the videos for your class. If this doesn't work, go to the top of the GC list for this week 9-28 to 10-2).

You will find two assignments for the videos that are direct links to the videos. Try to use the links in these GC postings to access the videos.  This will enable you to answer the questions.

On Thursday/Friday, we will start filling in a chart showing the various territories that were added to the US between 1776 and 1898. The chart and maps are in GC.

AP Euro:

SG: The first section of your SG was due on Friday.

Read pages 407 to 414.  Questions for this week: 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16.  Due Friday.

Remember to use the vocabulary terms listed in the SG in your answers.  This is crucial -- at the very least, it saves you from having to write definitions for all the words.  Go through the words on the list and ask yourself if you can explain what they are and identify the significance of each term. If not, you should go back to the book and read more closely.

It's really important that you know and can use all of these terms, so I will have to assign some of them.

AP Daily Videos: These are in AP Classroom. You need them.  They're short, and they reinforce the content that some of you seem to be missing in the Distance Learning context.  Watch one every day.

This week's videos (Unit 2): 2.2 #1, #2 and #3.  2.3 #2 and #3.

Readings: Read the sources (Luther, Calvin, the Council of Trent). You will be filling in the chart comparing Lutheranism, Calvinism and Roman Catholicism.  Zwingli is also on the chart. Get started on this!  You should already have some of this filled in.  If you need to set aside work time to get this done, come to Open TT!  The Overview slides contain some good info for the chart.

As you read, make note of categories of comparison.  For example (and most importantly) what is the relationship between church and state envisioned by each religion/reformer. Other examples: how is salvation achieved?  What is role of the priesthood? What is the nature of the Eucharist (holy communion)? What are the sources of religious authority? ETC.

Think of Catholic doctrine as the baseline position, then ask yourself how each Protestant reformer differed from the Catholic position and from other Protestants.

Also posted in GC:  Excepts from Erasmus, Notes on the New Monarchs/Italian Wars and a set of "Overview" slides.

DBQs.  Continue to work on this. I've commented on your chart and given you a preliminary score.  Read the comments, which are intended to let you know where you are having trouble.  Make any needed changes and re-submit.  Focus on one issue at time (context, thesis, argument, POV, etc.)  You may  not have time to fix everything, but fix what you can in the next few days and re-submit. Remember to come to TT or Office Hours for assistance.

Week 7 of Distance Learning 9-21 to 9-25

Important Information for All Students

Distance Learning Schedule:

 https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1jpE9JCMRu6f6EYJPurjfNwITZJQmE-0EyANK2zdlqJc/edit?usp=sharing

First Quarter Grade Reports: First quarter ends on Friday, October 9th.

Late Work:  Policies for late work are the same as you would expect if we were on campus.  Work should be submitted on time in order for you to be eligible for full credit.  Although assignments remain posted in Google Classroom, you should check with me before submitting late work.  Please do not re-submit work unless you and I have agreed on this.

Late work is mainly a time management problem There is a lot of work time built into the schedule.  Please reflect on whether you are using this time effectively, especially on Wednesdays.

Copied Work: If you turn in work that is copied from any source, I will give you a zero for that assignment. This includes work copied from another student.

Open Trojan Time and Office Hours:  Please come to Trojan Time if you have questions about assignments or would like to do homework and ask questions as you work.

New alternative for Open Trojan Time:  You will soon be able to check in to a schoolwide Open Trojan Time session to establish your attendance.  This is an alternative to teacher-based study hall.  You can still go to a teacher's Open TT session, but if you will be doing independent work and do not need teacher support, you will have this new option. Check your email for more information.

Lunch pickup: don't forget that you can pick up a bag lunch here at CVHS (breakfast and lunch are also available at some other schools in CV). Lunch is handed out at the Mabel Street turnaround.

Classes

EL World History:

You should already have turned in your chart of the philosophers, and the "Philosophers' Statements."    Remember to focus on the type of government that each philosopher wanted.

This week, you will learn more basic social studies vocabulary (#5 & #6).  I'm working on a big vocabulary quiz -- be sure to study the words in your vocabulary notebook.  When you study, say the words out loud and read the definitions out loud in English.

You will also complete the Google Slides presentation on the philosophers, and write a paragraph about one of them.  Your slides should be complete by Wednesday, so that you can begin writing your paragraph.

On Friday, I will post a vocabulary review covering time periods and vocabulary pages 1-4.

US History:

Spiral Notebooks:  Please try to get a spiral notebook to use for notes in this class.  You can usually get a spiral notebook for less than a dollar at Target.  Recycle -- Look through the old school materials you have around the house and see if you can find a notebook with some unused paper in it! You can also make a notebook by stapling some sheets of paper together.  Try to do this by Thursday....think of it as a craft project!

Padlet: Everyone should sign in to Padlet.  You will probably have to change the password, since nobody seems to know what their password is.  I will use this program again, so if you haven't signed in, do it now.

PBS Sign-In: In the Google Classroom stream, you will notice a link for signing in to PBS Learning Media.  Please sign in.

Due last week: You should have submitted the last couple of assignments in the "Colonies to Constitution" unit last week.  This includes the Revolutionary War questions and the questions about the Constitution of the United States.

These assignments have been scored, and the scores are in Aeries.

The test was due on Thursday or Friday of last week.  Grades are in Aeries.

This Week: We are starting a new unit on the Expansion of the USA.

On Monday, I will introduce some key concepts and terms for this unit.

Read the textbook section "Territorial Expansion" (pages 130-135). This is posted in GC.

Take Cornell notes as you read. There is a form for you to use in GC.   These notes are due on Wednesday.

On Thursday/Friday, I will lecture on Early US Policies.  There is a form in Google Classroom for you to use for lecture notes.

Watch the video on the Corps of Discovery (Lewis and Clark).

I will post a quiz next week covering these initial assignments.

AP Euro:

Machiavelli and More: These have been scored and entered in Aeries.  I extended the deadline to 9-22, because there was no due date shown in GC.

We're wrapping up the Renaissance with some DBQ practice.  The goal is to understand how the DBQ should be structured and how it is scored.

Due on Wednesday: Complete DBQ layout chart for the 7-question DBQ on Renaissance humanists. Refer to the scoring rubric as you fill out the chart.  The chart should be one step away from a fully-written draft of the essay -- once it's filled in, you should able to write the essay based on the chart.

Try to give your outline(hypothetical essay) a score, using the 7-point rubric. Remember, there's no "almost" or "sort of."  Either you earn the point or you don't.

Please try to keep your stress level low! We are learning a difficult, college-level skill!  The stakes are relatively low right now, so don't over-think it.

New Unit: Reformation and Religious Wars.

The SG for this unit is posted in GC.  Please read the first two sections and answer the questions 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 & 8.  You should have this finished by Friday.

Remember to use the vocabulary terms listed in the SG in your answers.  Go through the words on the list and ask yourself if you can explain what they are and identify the significance of each term. If not, you should go back to the book and read more closely.

Readings: I apologize in advance for the quality of the scan!  Read the sources (Luther, Calvin, the Council of Trent, Zwingli). You will be filling in the chart comparing Lutheranism, Calvinism and Roman Catholicism.  Get started on this!  It won't be due until next week, but don't put it off.  You can also fill in things you learn while reading the textbook.

As you read, make note of categories of comparison.  For example (and most importantly) what is the relationship between church and state envisioned by each religion/reformer.

Closed Trojan Time: Check your email for a notice about Closed Trojan Time. Some students have been moved to a different teacher for Closed TT.
