Important Information for All Students:
We are nearing the end of another week of Distance Learning. Take a moment to reflect on your adjustment to this process. The school administration is working to create improvements in this process, in case we have to continue the Distance Learning model in the future. You will need to adapt to this model in order to be successful in your educational goals.

I am often writing comments and corrections directly on the work you have submitted in Google Classroom.  If you want to read the comments or corrections, you will need to re-open your documents.

If you are a senior, please respond to the senior survey!

5th Period Thursday at 1:00 pm
6th Period: Friday at 1:00 pm

Email me if you have questions, or come to office hours.  If you would like an individual conference with me, email me and I will set it up.

US History:
This is catch-up week. Check Aeries to see if you have missing assignments. Don't go all the way back to earlier units (such as WWII) or previous quarters.

1. As soon as you finish the assignment for the Cuban Missile Crisis, take the Cold War/50s Quiz. A link for this multiple choice quiz is posted in Google Classroom.  It's a Google Form, so you can just click on the correct answers.  You are free to check your answers by re-opening previous assignments, or you can use your textbook.

Helpful textbook sections: Cold War Begins, pp 562-568.  Cold War Deepens, pp 569-575. Little Rock High School Integration and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, pp 668 - 679.

By Friday, you should be ready to move on to Vietnam and the Cold War here in the USA.

EL World History:
The Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin
1. Go to Google Classroom and open the new assignment on "The Soviet Union under Lenin And Stalin."  As you go through the slides, you will find that there are questions for you to answer. Click on the slide with the questions and type your answers directly on the slide.  Don't forget to turn in your work.

2. Open the Edpuzzle video on Stalin.  You can find the link in Google Classroom.  Play the video and answer the multiple choice questions that are embedded in the video. Be sure to finish the entire video, so that your work will show up as "turned in" in Google Classroom.

Your completed work on this part of the unit is due on Thursday.

AP European History:

If you are taking the AP Exam in a couple of weeks (!) come to Office Hours on Friday.  The College Board has been sending you information via email, and I have also been sending you (numerous) emails about the exam.  I will send you an email today.  If you don't answer my email, I will have to call your house to check on you. Please don't make me do this.

Chapter 27 SG (last section)
1. Read pages 2920-931.  Review Questions: 19, 21, 22.

Continue to work on the IDs.

2. The Nazi-Soviet Pact: Article By Orlando Figes
Read the short article posted in Google Classroom. There are also questions posted in a separate GC assignment.

This is a really good article, and not long.  Figes is a strong critic of the USSR.  The small nations of Eastern Europe were the big losers of WWII.  Faced with a choice between Hitler and Stalin, their populations were politically divided during the war, and their countries were subjected to 50 years of Soviet oppression and mismanagement afterward.
All of the Chapter 27 material is due on Friday (May 1st).

Lectures: All of the following lectures/videos, as well as earlier lectures on Stalin, Mussolini and the Nazis, are posted in Google Classroom. They are part of the required material for this unit, and will be covered on a unit test at the end of the chapter.

Important Information for All Students:
Progress reports: Fourth quarter progress reports will be submitted to the office today. A note about "grades."  Most of you will not see any grade/progress report.  Only students who have not been responding to Distance Learning and/or are in danger of failing the second semester will receive a progress report grade.

I would like to give positive feedback to all of you who are regularly turning in work for US History! Many of you are doing your best to adapt to the Distance Learning environment, and I want you to know that this is a benefit to you, even if it is difficult to stay motivated. The assignments you are completing are essential curriculum for your grade level!  In the future, your high school teachers and college instructors will certainly expect that you know this stuff!  Give yourself a pat on the back for taking responsibility for your education in a very challenging time!

Reminder: Wednesdays are "open-campus" from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.  This is a good time to retrieve things from your locker.  Classrooms are not open.

US History:
This week, you are completing any unfinished assignments for the Cold War  and the 1950s!  We will move on to Vietnam at the end of the week.  Check Aeries to see what you might still need to complete, and go to Google Classroom to find the links and documents you need.  Don't go back to assignments related to WWII or to previous quarters! Just try to get all the Cold War assignments finished.

1. Cold War/50s Quiz:  The quiz is posted in Google Classroom.  Open the quiz (it's a Google Form), and click the correct answers.  Don't forget to submit the quiz when you are finished. This is a multiple choice quiz. You are free to review your earlier assignment or use your textbook to check your answers. You goal should NOT be to finish quickly, but to take the time to get all the answers correct.

Helpful textbook sections: Cold War Begins, pp 562-568.  Cold War Deepens, pp 569-575. Little Rock High School Integration and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, pp 668 - 679.

Important Information for All Students:
Reminder: Open-campus on Wednesday, from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.  Since on-campus instruction will not resume for the remainder of this academic year, this is a time for you to collect personal items from your locker.

In case you haven't heard, final exams have been cancelled.  I will continue to post quizzes and tests, but we will not have the usual school-wide final exams.

The administration is trying to work out how to do end-of-the-year stuff -- graduation, locker cleanout, book check in/out, equipment returns, awards, etc.  You will be receiving information about these things in the coming weeks.

Continue to check Aeries.  This is a quick way for your and your parents to see how well you are adjusting to the Distance Learning model.

I am currently posting progress report "grades" for 4th quarter. The grading possibilities are CR (credit) and NC (no credit).

Not a lot of attendance at last week's Office Hours. If you have questions about assignments or late work or whatever, you should check in for Office Hours. I may switch from Google Hangouts to Zoom, so be on the lookout for an invitation.

Keep emailing me with typos, errors, bad links, etc. I have been able to correct several mistakes based on student feedback!

US History:
The goal for this week is to have everyone catch up with our unit on the Cold War, before we move on to the Vietnam War.

1. You should have watched the Edpuzzle video on American society in the 1950s (The Century: America's Time, Happy Daze).  Answer the questions that are embedded in the video.  If you don't finish the whole thing and answer all the questions, it will not show up as completed in Google Classroom.

2. Complete the assignment on the Cuban Missile Crisis. This includes studying the slide presentation, watching the short video, and answering the questions.

Links for all parts of this assignment (slides, video, questions) are in Google Classroom.

3. A quiz is coming!  I will post a quiz tomorrow. The quiz will be multiple choice and cover all of the Cold War material so far. You can review vocabulary terms by doing the Cold War Quizlet. There's a link for it in the Resources and Links section in Google Classroom.

EL World History:
I should now have your completed materials for Karl Marx. This includes reading/studying the slides on Marx that are posted in Google Classroom. The slides are posted in the Resources and Links section.  You should also open the assignment that contains a worksheet for notes and some questions. Use the worksheet to take notes, and then answer the questions (at the end of the notes).

The Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin
1. Go to Google Classroom and open the new assignment on "The Soviet Union under Lenin And Stalin."  As you go through the slides, you will find that there are questions for you to answer. All of the Chapter 27 material is due on Friday (May 1st).

3. Lectures: I hope you are keeping up with the lectures.  The material in the slides will help you complete the SG, and prepare you for the upcoming units on the postwar period.

I've posted links on Google Classroom for these presentations. Here a a couple of new items, including a video.

You should have finished watching the Edpuzzle video on American society in the 1950s. The questions are embedded in the video.  The link for this assignment is in Google Classroom: "The Century: America's Time" This is an easy assignment and the video is entertaining. Go for it.

Please check Aeries to get a sense of how well you are responding to Distance Learning. Keep in mind that there is a possibility that we (high schools as well as colleges and universities!) will have to move to a Distance Learning mode again in the future if the situation calls for it.  It's important for you to develop study habits that bring you success in the Distance Learning context.

Continue to work on the IDs.  When answering "ID" questions, it's really important to write something that is meaningful to you.  If you copy something from a website, it's highly unlikely that you will gain any knowledge that will be useful to you later during a test or essay. Make sure your answers are related to the unit we are covering.

Social Democracy/Liberal democracy (do this as a single answer -- compare/contrast them), Fuhrer Principe and Collective Will (again, you can combine these), One Party State, Socialism in One Country, Cult of Personality, New Communist Upper Class, Coordination (Nazis), Civil Society (what is it in general; why is it significant).

New Lecture. These slides are focused on the context for the rise of Nazism. They look back at intellectual and social trends that had been developing over the years.  It is our goal to be able to place events in context in this kind of complex and educated way.  As you go through the slides, you should recognize the trends that are listed there -- these are things we have been studying, particularly during the units on the 19th century.

Important Information for All Students:
Today (Wednesday) is "open campus" for students.  You may enter the CVHS campus between 8:00 am and 10:00 am to get books and other materials.  Classrooms are not open.

Office Hours:  Check Google Classroom for the link to attend office hours with me tomorrow and Friday.  These are optional meetings.

5th Period" Thursday at 1:00 pm
6th Period: Friday at 1:00 pm

Remember to email me with any questions about assignments or links.  Most assignments and materials are now in Google Classroom.

A note about late work:  It will be easier for you to understand the current assignments if you go back and complete assignments that you have missed. All the material I'm assigning right now is considered "essential" knowledge for US History students.  However, if you have multiple missed assignments, it's easy to get overwhelmed.  My advice is to start with recent/current assignments and try to get back on a regular schedule for your schoolwork in all your classes.  If you have time, you can always go back to earlier assignments, but you will feel better if you start with the stuff we're doing right now.

US History:
American Society in the 1950s
1. Go to Google Classroom and open the link for the video "The Century: America's Time." There are questions embedded in the video.  Don't forget to submit the assignment.  Due date is today, Wednesday, April 22nd.

2. Open the new assignment that contains the questions for you to answer.  Please use complete sentences; short paragraph answers may be needed.  Be sure to turn in your work.
This assignment is due on Monday, April 27th.

Once you finish the assignment on the Cuban Missile Crisis, try the Quizlet that's posted in GC.  It's a good review of important terms.

EL World History:
The Ideas of Karl Marx
Your notes on Karl Marx and your answers to the questions about Marx are due today, Wednesday, April 22nd.
1. Go to Google Classroom to find the slides (posted in the Resources & Links) section.

You can send me a picture of your notes if you want, or you can type them on the form.  Please DO NOT send me a picture of the answers to the questions -- the pictures are usually small and blurry and I can't read them!

1. Read pages 898-908 (the first two sections).
2. Review Questions: 1, 2, 3, 6, 8.
3. IDs.  We will only do political terms, since you have covered WWII events in previous years.

There do not seem to be any fill-ins in this SG!  Bummer.

As you may have noticed in Aeries, I'm giving "stamps" for work turned in on time.

Here's the key.  This doesn't really work as a review unless you actually TRY to answer the questions before looking at the key. Just sayin'.

I should have your SG for Chapter 26.
You should be downloading/studying the lectures I'm posting.  For purposes of the unit test, I will assume that you know the material in the lectures as well as the textbook.

I will continue to post lecture notes for this unit. For many of you, some of this stuff will be review. However, there is more political detail than you are used to.

Pay special attention to the whole "totalitarian" thing...what are the goals of total government control (whether communism or fascism), and how it is achieved.  How did these extremists come to power?  Why did so many people support them? How did they maintain control over such large societies?  You should be able to offer answers to these question. Be sure to contextualize!  These systems arose in particular historical circumstances.
