Week 4 of Distance Learning August 31 to September 4

 Important Information for All Students

Get a routine going for each of your classes. Check the class website (if there is one) and Google Classroom every day to make sure you see any new assignments or due dates.  Check your email frequently.

Today and tomorrow (August 31 and September 1) are the makeup days to pick up textbooks and other class materials.

The school is planning to hold virtual Back-to-School Night next week. More information to come.

Reminder about late work:  grading late work is a low priority for me, because there is so much other stuff to grade, post, edit, etc.  If work is substantially late, it's possible that I will not be able to grade it.  Check with me by email about this.

Classes:

EL World History:

We will start reviewing basic social studies vocabulary this week.  I hope that everyone now has the vocabulary notebooks that were distributed, along with a whiteboard.

Quiz! The quiz on terms related to time periods will be due on Wednesday, September 2. We'll review the terms on Tuesday.  The quiz is posted in Google Classroom, so you can work on it when you feel ready.

We will also start to discuss types of government. You will be creating a slide presentation showing different types of government.

US History:

You should have turned in your chart of facts about the British Colonies on Friday.

I will lecture on the French and Indian War in class on Monday/Tuesday, and you will also watch a video about this important turning point in the coming of the American Revolution.

Remember to watch the video all the way through, or Google Classroom will record it as ungraded.

Quiz! I will post a quiz that covers all the material we have covered so far.  This will be due on Friday, September 4.

Quizlet: Do the quizlet on the 13 Colonies.  It's just a set of flashcards for review. It's due at the end of next week.

On Thursday/Friday of this week, we will begin to discuss the events leading to the outbreak of the Revolution, and you will start creating a timeline in Google Slides (or PowerPoint).  This will be due by the end of next week.

Sources for your timeline include lecture notes, a textbook section (Toward Revolution) and a video (Road to Revolution).

APEH:

You should have turned in your Narrative of the Later Middle Ages. Scores are in Aeries.

Your SAQ on the later Middle Ages is due on Wednesday, September 2.  Remember to give yourself a limited amount of time to complete this practice SAQ....1/2 hour at the very most.  The goal is to see if you can cite specific historical evidence of the type requested in the question, and identify the significance (the relationship between your evidence and the question).  Use the SEA method to ensure that you are fully answering the question.

We will be starting the Renaissance this week.  Open the Chapter 12 SG and you will see that it is structured in the same way as the SG you completed over the summer.  It's a Word document, but you can open it in Docs and save it to your Drive, so that you can work with it.

Read the first two sections of text and answer the questions.  Keep your answers specific and informative, no fluff.  Answers are due on Friday (September 4).

Machiavelli and More: Start reading the excerpts from these two important authors and their most well-known works.  The questions are already posted.  Your goal is to have this reading done and be ready to answer the questions by Thursday of next week (September 10).  I know you really want to read these works in their entirety, but I have nevertheless posted excerpts.

Videos: Watch the videos on the Florentine Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance. They're not long, and they hit on major themes for this period.

Day 2!

 Important Information for All Classes:

Your morning routine: Check this weblog, then go to Google Classroom for assignments and materials.

Check your email frequently (multiple times a day).  A lot of emails are coming your way; many contain crucial information, dates, codes, etc.  The best way to get this under control is to read (then, answer or file) emails several times a day.

Please email me if there are problems with links, assignments, materials, etc., so I can try to fix it.

Create folders for your classes in your Drive. Instructions for how to do this are in Google Classroom.

The schedule for this week and next week is on the CVHS website.

Classes:

EL World History:

Today is your first class meeting!  The meeting is at 12:30 pm.

Your class code for Google Classroom was sent to you by email.  Go to classroom.google.com and sign in using the code.  This code also appears in Aeries, under the "visit website" button.

Sign yourself in to Google Classroom for an easy 5 points.

Once you are in Google Classroom, you can check out the materials posted there.

US History:

Your first class meetings are next week.

4th period meets on Tuesday.

5th period meets on Wednesday.

6th period meets on Thursday.

All meetings are at 12:30 pm.  Be sure to check your email for a link to the meeting. After the first meeting, links will be posted in Google Classroom.

Sign yourself in to Google Classroom.  The class code was sent to you by email.  The code is also posted in Aeries, under the button that says "visit website."

Once you are in GC, check out the organization of the site (which may change as the need arises). Take a look at the maps, or you can start reading the textbook section "Three Worlds Meet."  You can also watch the videos "What is A Colony" and "The Atlantic Slave Trade." These are not due until the week of August 24th, but you can get a head start if you want.

AP Euro:
Your next class meeting will be on Monday, August 24th.  Between now and the 24th, try to work out any schedule issues you may be having. Let me know if I can assist.

Please create an account on AP Central if you don't already have one.

This week, you are reviewing the materials on Google Classroom. These include:

  • Overview of AP European History (Tom Richey Video)
  • AP Euro Course Overview (time periods and concepts)
  • Information about the AP course and the AP exam.
  • Review videos on the Later Middle Ages.
  • Maps and Art: These slide presentations will remain posted for reference purposes. Preview them.
  • Notes on the "Fall of the Roman Empire."  Copy and print these, and store them in a binder, along with your Study Guide and other materials that will be helpful in studying for the AP exam in the spring.
  • Complete the "Narrative of the Later Middle Ages."  Instructions are in GC.  This assignment is due on August 28th.

I strongly recommend that you get a good-size 3-ring binder, so you can store items you print out. This would include your Study Guides and any handouts I give you, or notes you take during class.

For example, you might want to print out materials related to the AP exam, and create a section in your binder for that kind of stuff.

We will work our way through the book chapter by chapter, so you can create dividers for each chapter, or you can organize on the basis of the 4 time periods of the AP Euro course. (You can find these in GC.)

Day 1! Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!

Good morning, everyone, and welcome back to Distance Learning!

We were all hoping to be back on campus, but no such luck!  Life in the age of Covid is not ideal, by any means.  Let's all do our best to be patient with the situation and with each other. Do what you can to minimize stress and keep things in perspective.  We'll get through this together.

Check this weblog everyday!  Then, go to Google Classroom to find assignments and materials.

Remember to contact me (or your counselor or AP) via email if you have questions or need assistance or support!
