You read another section of your textbook, and took Cornell reading notes.  You answered the questions at the end of the chapter.  This assignment was due on Friday, December 4.

This Week:  We will begin discussing the "Second Industrial Revolution." We will discuss some of the problems that arose during this period.  You will take notes.

On Wednesday, you  will watch a video (in Edpuzzle) and answer the questions in the video.

On Friday, we will cover some important new ideas that arose during the Industrial Revolution.

Your final exam for this semester is on Wednesday of next week. You may have a 4x6 index card during the exam.  You may write on both sides.  You will turn the exam in at the end of the period.

US History:

We are continuing our unit on Industrialization and the Progressives.

I have posted a review guide for the final exam. You will find it at the top of the "Classwork" tab in Google Classroom.

Last Week:  The topic for last week was immigration during the period of industrialization (late 19th and early 20th centuries)

On Monday/Tuesday, you took notes on the great wave of immigration that came into the US in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  These were due on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

You watched a video on Ellis Island in Edpuzzle.

On Thursday/Friday, we analyzed some political cartoons showing some Americans' attitudes toward immigration.  You should have submitted your notes/analysis by the end of the day on Friday, December 4.

This Week: On Monday/Tuesday, I will provide an overview of the Progressive Era, and you will take notes.  If we don't finish this in class on Monday/Tuesday, we will finish it in class on Thursday/Friday.

You work for Wednesday is to read a primary source: an excerpt from Upton Sinclair's book "The Jungle."  Sinclair was a Progressive journalist (a "muckraker") who investigated conditions in meat packing plants.  Read/highlight the text, and take notes in the left-hand column. Give thoughtful answers to the questions that follow the reading.  This is due on Wednesday, December 9.

There is an extra credit video posted in GC.  It's a short video...to get credit, you must watch all the way through, and answer the questions correctly. Email me if you need a reset.

On Thursday/Friday, we will discuss Sinclair's work, and maybe cover some additional material on US foreign policy during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Final Exam: There will be multiple choice questions and at least one short answer question (a paragraph).  For the short-answer focus on the abolitionists, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of industrialization.

You may have a 4x6 index card during the exam. You may write on both sides. This will help you to finish the exam on time. Like other finals, you will turn the final in and the end of the period, whether or not you are finished.

AP Euro:

The deadline to register for the AP exam was November 11, There is a $40 fee for late signups, but there is no penalty for cancelling.  Sign up for the exam!

Please sign in to the AP Classroom site, whether or not you are planning to take the AP exam! I will be using some of the material on the site.

Textbook Pickup:  If you haven't already done so, please contact Ms. Oliver in the bookroom to pick up "Sources of the Western Tradition" by Marvin Perry.

Review the LEQ materials that have been posted in GC.

Last Week:

I lectured on the Scientific Revolution. The focus is changing "world view."

You completed the second section of the Chapter 16 SG.  I haven't been able to grade these yet, but I should have them from you.

New videos were posted in GC.  Remember that the AP site does not report grades in GC. If you watch them after I've graded them, send me an email listing the videos you watched, so I can check/grade them.

Pope: We'll discuss Pope's Deism in class, since he was a bit to mystical for most students. There is a short (slightly weird) video on Deism posted in GC.

I assigned two sections in the Perry book (Sources of the Western Tradition).  Read the two section openers on the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment.  Scientific Revolution pp. 36-38    Enlightenment p. 59.  What is the CONTEXT of the Enlightenment.  What was/had been going on -- BIG PICTURE?  There is no written assignment for this; just read the two sections.

Read as many of the section openers in the Perry book as possible.  You will also benefit from reading the blurbs that go with the primary source excerpts, even if you don't read the excerpts!

I posted a long PPt on the 18th century. Some ocd High School teacher put this together (no, it was not I).  https://slideplayer.com/slide/3905461/

This is a helpful review. Again, there's no written assignment; it's just for your own good.

This Week: I have posted the SGs for Chapters 17 and 18.  Read Chapter 17. SG questions are listed in GC.   The 18th century lays the groundwork for the  political turmoil and massive social and economic changes of the 19th century.

Videos for this week are posted in GC.   Three of these are in AP Classroom and the others are in Edpuzzle. By Thursday, we should be able to have a fruitful discussion of Hobbes, Locke, Voltaire and Rousseau.  Please note (again) that AP videos CANNOT be assigned in Google Classroom.  The GC entry is just a notice to you...the videos must be completed in the AP site.

Art: We looked at some art from the period on Monday, and we'll try to finish this soon, but you can always take a look at the slides on your own.

LEQ: Review the LEQ materials. You will write an LEQ in class on either Monday or Wednesday of next week.

I've posted some review sheets on various 18th century topics, including "enlightened absolutism" and 18th century "great power" conflicts, and 18th century British political developments.   These are in the section for next week (12-7 to 12-11)

There is also an extra credit video on Adam Smith.  He's covered in the book, but I couldn't figure out whether I already assigned this.  Watch it for 5 EC points.

Final Exam: The LEQ will be written on Monday.  The MC final will take place on Wednesday.
