Periods were short today, due to the Renaissance assembly.

US History
1. Students took the open-note quiz on "The New Frontier and the Great Society."
2. We continued to work on the Venn dieagram comparing MLK and Malcolm X.

World Civilizations
1. We discussed the part of the "Timeline of Modern Chinese History" that covers the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
2. Studnets took an open-note quiz on the timeline.

US History
1. We reviewed the posters from our "walking timeline."
2. Students started on a Venn diagram project comparing Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.
3. I stamped the homework outline entitled "New Frontier and Great Society." The open-note quiz is Friday.

World Civilizations
1. I stamped the "Timeline of Modern Chinese History," and we reviewed it together. We'll take an open-note quiz on this material on Friday.
2. We started watching a video entitled "Catch the Moon and Stars," about the early years of Mao's rule in China.

1. Students took notes on protests of the 1960s and also on the counterculture movement.
2. We completed the "walking timeline" project.
3. Due tomorrow: outline on "New Frontier and Great Society." Open-note homework quiz on this material will take place on Friday.

World Civilizations
1. We discussed the conditions in China prior to the commuist revolution.
2. Students completed a chart on various aspects of China's situation in the pre-revolutionary period.
3. Students worked with partners to fill in a timeline of modern Chinese history.
4. The completed timeline is due on Thursday; we may have a quiz on this material on Friday.

1. I handed out a textbook assignment entitled "New Frontier and Great Society." The outline for this section of text is due on Thursday, May 29.
2. Students worked in class on their civil rights posters. Most were finished at the end of the period. They must be ready at the beginning of the block period next week...no late posters!

World Civilizations
1. I handed out an extra credit worksheet on the Opium War. This is due at the block period next week.
2. We reviewed the assignment entitled "China Responds to Pressure from the West," and students took an open-note quiz on this material.
3. We watched the very end of the "Forbidden City."
4. Please bring your books to the block period next week!

2. Students took a page of lecture notes on Chinese Schools of Thought.
3. We watched more of "The Forbidden City."
4. The open-note homework quiz on "China Responds to Pressure from the West" will take place on Friday.

Block Periods: Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21

US History
1. Students had a few minutes in class to complete the Civil Rights identifications.
2. We discussed civil rights and liberty and the connection between liberty and equality.
3. We discussed voting rights limitations and Jim Crow laws, then reviewed the identifications.
4. We reviewed the racial statistics and talked about the meaning of the figures.
5. Students watched a short segment of the "Eyes on the Prize" documentary dealing with the death of Emmett Till.
6. You need to bring your textbook to class on Thursday and Friday.

World Civilizations
1. I stamped and we reviewed the map of China and the "Land of Discovery" reading guide.
2. As a class, we read a first person account of footbinding.
3. Students copied a diagram showing the Chinese dynastic cycle and explaining the "Mandate of Heaven."
4. We watched part of a video on the Chinese imperial system entitled "The Forbidden City."
5. I handed out a textbook assignment entitled "China Responds to Pressure from the West." Answers are due on Thursday. We will have an open-note homework quiz on this assignment on Thursday or Friday.

1. We took a literacy test to see if we were qualified to vote! Nobody made the grade.
2. Students completed the worksheets on racial statistics in class.
3. I handed out a list of Civil Rights terms; students should use the textbook to identify the terms. This assignment is due at the block period.
World Civilizations
1. Students worked in class to complete two assignments to kick off our unit on China: A map of China and a reading with questions entitled "Land of Discovery." Both are due at the block period.

1. Students took the unit test on Vietnam and handed in notebook packets, including their essays on the "lessons of Vietnam."
2. We started our unit on the Civil Rights Movement -- students worked in class to interpret a series of charts showing statistics on various racial-ethnic groups in the US. We'll finish these in class on Monday.
3. Please bring your books to class on Monday.

World Civilizations
1. Students took the unit test on the Middle East, and wrote essays on the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians.
2. I will collect a notebook packet on Monday.

1. Our music festival was at least as good as Woodstock!
2. The unit test on Vietnam is tomorrow (Friday). Your essays on the "lessons of Vietnam" are due on Friday as well.

World Civilizations
1. I gave students the prompt for the essay on tomorrow's unit test on the Middle East. We reviewed thesis statements, topic sentences, etc.
2. We reviewed for the test.
3. I announced an optional "extra credit" assignment on the recent developments in the Middle East peace process.
4. Students may still retake the Middle East vocabulary quiz for a maximum of 12 points! Deadline is Friday.

Block Periods: Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14

US History
1. Students worked on their Vietnam-era songs. The music festival will be held on Thursday.
2. Our unit test is Friday, May 16.

World Civilizations
1. Students worked briefly to complete their peace proposals for the Middle East conflict, then presented proposals to the class. We voted for the best plan.
2. I handed out the review sheet for the unit test, which will take place on Friday. I also notifided students of the essay topic.
3. Please bring your books to class on Friday, May 16 and Monday, May 19.

Monday, May 12

US History
1. We finished "Dear America" and discussed the writing assignment.
2. I played a few more Vietnam-era songs; students will have time to work on their songs during the block periods.
3. The unit test will be on Friday, May 16; the essay on "lessons of Vietnam" will also be due that day.

World Civilizations
1.Students started working on their peace proposals for the Mideast. Presentations will begin during the block periods.
2. The unit test for the Middle East will take place on Friday, May 16.

1. We watched "Dear America."
2. I played a couple of Vietnam-era songs, and introduced the "Vietnam-Era Music Festival" assignment.
3. Remember that the essay on the "Lessons of Vietnam" is due next week, when we take the unit test.

World Civilizations
1. Students were given time in class to work on the outline of "Jews and Palestinians: Two Claims to the Middle East."
2. We read a summary of three main issues that separate the Israelis and Palestinians, and discussed how these issues create obstacles to peace.
3. I handed out two fact sheets showing the individuals and groups that are important in the current Middle East conflict.
4. We discussed our upcoming peace conference, in which students will work in groups to propose maps and peaceful solutions to the conflict in the Middle East. We'll break into our groups on Monday, and be ready to present solutions during the block periods on Tuesday and Wednesday.

1. We finished our Vietnam timeline.
2. We discussed the draft and various classifications and deferrments.
3. I assigned a writing assignment on the "lessons of Vietnam." To help with this, students are watching the excellent video "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam."

World Civilizations1. Students took a short vocabulary quiz on terms related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
2. We finished reviewing "Conflicts in the Middle East." I handed out a timeline to help with this complicated series of events. I also displayed a series of maps on the overhead to show how the territory in Palestine changed hands during the course of partition, wars, etc.
3. We watched a bit more of the PBS video on the "50 Years War."
4. I handed out a reading for the students to outline...I will allow time in class tomorrow to work on this.

US History
1. We reviewed the assignment entitled "1968: A Year of Crises." Students took an open-note quiz on this material.
2. I handed out a reading and questions on the reaction of the American public to the war in Vietnam. Answers are due on Friday.
3. We watched a video on the My Lai massacre, and discussed the impact of this incident on US public opinion.

World Civilizations
1. We began an intensive study of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a political cartoon.
2. We reviewed the first part of the assignment entitled "Conflicts in the Middle East."
3. I handed out a map of Israel and the surrounding areas, and students marked their maps to show the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights. I also showed a map of the original UN partition plan for Palestine.
4. We started watching an excellent PBS video entitled "The 50 Years War."
5. On Thursday, students will take a quiz on vocabulary terms related to the conflict in the Middle East.

1. We worked on the Vietnam War timeline, completing all sections through the Pentagon Papers.
2. We watched a short video segment showing President Johnson's dilemma regarding US involvement in Vietnam.
3. Students will take an open-note quiz on "1968: A Year of Crises" during the block period this week.

World Civilizations
1. Students finished the chart showing important events in the formation of the modern Middle East; we reviewed the contents of this chart together.
2. I handed out a list of important vocabulary words and definitions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We'll take a quiz on these terms on Thursday, May 8.
3. I stamped the textbook assignment entitled "Conflicts in the Middle East." We'll review this during the block period.
