US History:
1. Due Thursday, Dec. 21 -- Foreign policy writing paragraph. Your topic sentence should make a strong assertion about what type of foreign policy you think the US should follow. Use one or more of the terms on the "foreign policy spectrum" to describe the type of foreign policy you think is best for the US. (Isolationism, collective security, internationalism, imperialism.) In your paragraph, give at least one example of a current or historical event involving the US and another nation or nations, and explain why you think your choice of foreign policy would be best. Check the definitions of each policy type on the handout you received in class. Example: what type of foreign policy should the US adopt with respect to Darfur? Iraq?
2. What was the term for the idea that the US was fated to occupy the entire North American continent? What was the term for the idea that America is a nation of pioneers, and we must keep expanding in order to stay true to our national character? Hint: you should be able to find these in your notebook, if you have been keeping it in good order.

World Civ:
1. Be sure you've carefully read and highlighed the handout on "Bismarck and the Unification of Germany." We'll discuss it on Monday.
2. Bring your books to block next week!
3. What were Prussian noble landowners called?

APEH:
1. Answers to the Scientific Revolution worksheet are due Monday. No exceptions!
2. Read Candide and be ready to discuss it...the book contains loads of symbolism...
3. More lectures on the way...balance of power wars.
4. Rousseau wanted to return to the state of nature. Marx postulated the "new man." Who is the missing link between these two...the guy who wanted the "republic of virtue?"

Thursday, December 14, 2006

US History:
1. No homework! If your notes on Darfur aren't in one of the formats we discussed (outline or Cornell), please rewrite them so you can get credit for them when they are collected.
2. You should have a new divider in your notebook for our unit on "Foreign Policy."

World Civ:
1. Carefully highlight the handout on "Bismarck and the Unification of Germany." Remember that you are highlighting only the most essential terms and concepts.

2. More lecture coming...kwitcherbelliakin!

I will be absent on Wednesday, December 13, in order to attend a meeting at the district office. You will have both a sub and my student teacher, Mr. Teich, to assist you in class!

US History:
1. You will take the unit test on Industrialization, Immigration and the Progressives as an open-notebook test. Please come with your notebook in good order! When you finish the test, take a copy of the reading on Darfur. Read and highlight the article, and create a set of reading notes (outline format or "Cornell" format) on a separate sheet of paper. These will be due at the end of the block period.
2. We are starting a new unit on US foreign policy in the late 19th and early 20th century. You'll need a new divider in your notebook for this unit.
3. We're closer to the end of the semester than you may realize. After this brief unit, we will cover the 1920s, and then it will be time for the final exam. I'll be handing out a review sheet for the final right after the holiday break.

World Civ:
1. We'll be starting the movie "Gandhi." Be especially watchful for evidence of good and bad aspets of British colonialism in India. In what ways can an empire be helpful? In what ways can it be harmful?

APEH:
1. During the block period, you'll be working on a set of questions and a timeline of the scientific revolution. You may have a partner. Please type you responses, and make a copy for each partner as well as for me.
2. You should be reading Chapter 18 in McKay. We're covering Chapters 18-20 as a single unit. All three chapters deal with the social, political and economic transformations of the 18th century.
3. Read Candide. Please try to have it read by Monday...it's not long, and it's a fun read.

Friday, December 08, 2006

2nd quarter progress report period is closed. I'll post the grades on Monday, and you should check to see if there are any errors or things you don't understand. I entered a class participation score (out of 50), and this did change some of the grades.

3. I'll collect your Chapter 16 Study Guide on Monday.
4. For those whiners who think we've been moving too fast, we are actually behind schedule, and we will need to pick up the pace if we want to finish our material in time for the big exam in May. We'll be covering Chapters 18-20, on the social and intellectual changes of the 18th century, as a single unit.

Thursday, December 07, 2006

It has been argued that Russia had its Renaissance during the reign of Peter the Great and his immediate successors (through Catherine the Great). In what ways is this true? In what ways is it not true?
