Friday, December 3 is the end of the grading period for 2nd quarter progress reports.

World Civ:
On Monday, I stamped your answers to the biographical reading about Gandhi.
We took some notes on the independence movement in India.

I handed out a map/timeline of the dispute between India and Pakistan over the territory of Kashmir. Your assignment: read the handout, highlighting or underlining important points. On the back of the sheet, in the blank space, list what you think are the five most significant facts, events, ideas, etc., that help in understanding the conflict. Then, write a 250 - 300 word summary of the conflict. Your summary should be typed, double-spaced, 1" margins, 12 pt. font. Summaries are due on Monday, December 6th.

We're wrapping up this unit, and will be ready to take the test by Monday, 12-6.

US History:
We'll review the worksheet on Progressives during the first half of the block period this week, then take the test.

Our next unit covers the emergence of the US as a world power at the turn close of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries.

APEH:
Study questions for the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment were due on Monday, 11-29. Your responsed to the questions on Candide are due at block (12-1).

At block, you will have additional time to work on your oral presentations on 18th century social history. We should be able to begin the presentations during block and finish on Thursday.

The test on Chapters 18, 19 and 20 rapidly approaches! As soon as presentations are finished, I will give a review lecture on the later Enlightenment, and hand out essay topics. At that point, we'll be ready for the test.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

World Civ:
We have begun watching the movie "Gandhi" and taking notes on evidence of the impact of imperialism. We'll continue next week; expect to take the test on imperialism before the end of next week.
No holiday homework.

US History:
I stamped and we discussed "The New Immigration."
Students worked on class to complete a worksheet on progressive reformers.
No holiday homework.

APEH:
Students worked in class to complete the readings and study questions for Chapters 18 and 19. This material should be finished by Monday after Thanksgiving. Study questions on Candide may be turned in at block.
Be sure to bring your book to class on Monday, so you can begin preparing oral presentations on Chapter 20 (18th century social history).

World Civ:
We reviewed several assignments today. At block, we'll take a short open-note quiz on India. This quiz will cover the material about India we've had so far.
After the quiz, we'll move on to modern India, and then begin watching excerpts from the wonderful movie "Gandhi."

US History:
I collected the short writing assignment on immigrant acculturation.
Answers to the "New Immigration" questions will be due at block.
I gave an introductory lecture on the Progressives, and we read an excerpt from Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.
Be sure to bring your textbooks to class at block.

APEH:
You are working on several assignments: the timeline of the Scientific Revolution; a set of questions about the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment; a short excerpt from Pope's Essay on Man, with questions contrasting the ideas expressed by Pope and the ideas in Voltaire's Candide.
You should have completed the required reading for Chapters 18 and 19, including the selections from Perry.

World Civ:
I gave students time in class to finish comparing Hindu and Muslim society, and to work on a map of India and a textbook assignment/timeline.
These materials are due on Monday. We'll take a quiz on early India/Hindus/Muslims early next week.

US History:
Students finished analyzing a set of political cartoons showing American attitudes toward immigrants at the turn of the last century. I assigned a reading entitled "The New Immigration." Answers to the question at the bottom of the reading are due on Monday, 11/22.
Also due on Monday: your 300 word mini-essay on "Models of Acculturation."

APEH:
I collected the Study Guide for Chapters 16 & 17.
We compared our outlines for the Dutch Republic DBQ with sample answers from the AP test.
You should be finished reading Chapter 18 and nearly finished with Candide.
I assigned readings in Perry.
We'll go into groups to work on a set of study questions for the Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment and Candide.

World Civ:
We took slide notes about motive for imperialism and worked on a map of the British Empire. The map is due on Thursday, 11/18.

US History:
We took the quiz on "Facing a New Order."
I assigned a 300-word mini-essay based on the handout "Models of Immigrant Acculturation." Responses to this prompt are due on Monday, 11/5/22...typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins, of course.
We started analyzing a group of political cartoons showing attitudes toward immigrants during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
On Thursday, some students will be absent to participate in a health survey. The rest of us will watch a video on the Homestead Steel strike. You will also have time to finish the cartoons.

APEH:
We took the test on Chapters 16 & 17 and started to plan a DBQ on the rise and fall of the Dutch Republic.
Start reading Chapter 18 in McKay, and continue with Candide.

World Civ:
Your maps of Africa and your homework entitled "Imperialism Divides Africa" are due at block.
We'll view some slides illustrating motives for imperialism, and then work on a map of the British Empire.
Please remember to bring your books to block this week.
Get your notebook in order!

US History:
Your homework assignment entitled "Facing a New Order" is due at block. We may take the homework quiz at block or wait until later in the week.
Those of you who are taking the Sex Survey this year will go to the library during class on Thrusday 11/18.

APEH:
The multiple choice test on Chapters 16 and 17 will take place at block this week. You may turn in your Study Guide on Friday. Please include your "PERSIA" comparison of England/France and Holland/Spain with your Study Guide.
We'll start work on the Dutch Republic DBQ at block.
You should be reading Candide.

Happy Veterans' Day (Marine Corps Birthday). Have a great 4-day weekend!

World Civ:
At block, we viewed and discussed some examples of European art from the period of the Industrial and French Revolutions.
I stamped the homework assignment on imperialism in the Congo, and students took brief notes introducing the concept of imperialism.
I handed out a homework assignment entitled "Imperialism Divides Africa." Answers are due at the block period next week -- either 11-16 or 11-17.
Students began work on a map of the European "scramble for Africa."

US History:
We reviewed the homework assignment entitled "Populism and Protest," and then took the open-note homework quiz on this assignment. Remember that only stamped notes may be used on these quizzes!
We finished our group project "World of Work."
I handed out a homework assignment entitled "Facing a New Order." Answers are due at the block period next week, either 11-16 0r 11-17.

APEH:
We'll try to finish group presentations on Chapter 17 today (Thursday).
Keep working on Study Guides!
Outlines on two topics from Chapter 16 were due today.

World Civ:
On Monday, we took the unit test on Industrialization, and collected a packet of work from the notebook.
Students started working on an assignment for our next unit, Imperialism. You should have a new divider for this unit in your notebook.
Please remember to bring your book to block this week!

US History:
On Monday, we started a group project called "The World of Work." We'll finish this at block and also take the open-note homework quiz on the assignment entitled "Populism and Protest."

APEH:
Students worked in groups to create presentations on various aspects of absolutism in Eastern Europe. At block, each group will make a short presentation using the overhead, as well as distribute a one-page summary on their subject to the class. Please make sure you have 30 copies of your class handout.
Due at block: two outlines on topics from Chapter 15. You should also be finished with your PERSIA comparisons of England/France and Spain/the Dutch Republic, as well as your notes comparing Hobbes and Bossuet.
The test covering Chapters 16 and 17 (Absolutism/Constitutionalism and Eastern Absolutism) will take place early next week.
Don't forget to locate a copy of Candide, either in print or online.

World Civ:
On Friday, 11/5, we'll review the handout you worked on in class on Thursday entitled "Patterns of Thought."
We'll review for the test on the Industrial Revolution, which will take place on Monday, 11/8.
Remember to have your notebook with you when you take the test, so you can hand in a packet of homework.

US History:
On Friday, we'll finish up the video on Ida Tarbell and JD Rockefeller.
Your 300-word essay ("What's Good for Business is Good for America?") is due Friday.
The homework assignment entitled "Populism and Protest" is due Monday, 11/8.

APEH:
You should be about finished reading Chapter 16 in McKay, and the related readings in Perry.
I will allow further time in class to finish the PERSIA assignment comparing England/France and Spain/Netherlands. Pay special attention to the rise of the Dutch Republic...
Outlines on two essay topics are due on Friday.
Be sure to bring your book and Study Guide to class, so you can work on anything you need to finish.
We'll start on Chapter 17 (Eastern Absolutism) next week.

World Civ:
Two assignments are due on Thursday.
1. Six reading guide questions for the readings entitled "Industrialization Begins" and "Great Britain Leads the Way." Put your questions on one side of the page and your answer key on the other side.
2. Your answers to the "Industrialization Statements."

We'll be taking the test for this unit early next week (Monday or block).

US History:
Your answers to the reading guide entitled "The Rise of Industrialization" are due at block. We'll take an open-note quiz on this assignment.
We'll also finish our slide lecture. Remember that these notes are your resource for answering the short writing assignment -- True or false: What's good for business is good for America. Your typed, double-spaced, 300 word answer is due on Friday, November 5.

APEH:
We'll talk a bit more about Montaigne at block.
Keep reading McKay. I'll give a short lecture on French absolutism, and you'll have time to work on the essay outlines from Chapter 15.
By Thursday, we should be able to go into groups to compare England and France using the PERSIA categories. We'll also compare Bossuet and Hobbes on absolutism.
Chapter 17 will be covered by group presentations.
We'll take the unit test on Chapters 16 and 17 by the end of next week.
